How to Create a Tech Pack — Even Without a Designer

You do not need professional design software or a fashion degree. You need accuracy, specificity, and the right starting point.

Step 1
Get your reference garment
Buy the garment that most closely matches what you want to produce. Wear it. Note what is right and what needs changing. This physical reference is more valuable than any design software — a factory can measure a physical garment and reverse-engineer a pattern from it in 1–2 days. Write down every change you want: longer body, narrower sleeve, lower shoulder seam, bigger pocket.
Step 2
Take or commission accurate measurements
Lay the reference garment flat and measure every key point: chest (across), waist (across), hip (across), body length (back), sleeve length, shoulder width, armhole depth, cuff width, and collar height. Record measurements in centimetres — most international factories work in cm. Note each measurement point precisely so the factory measures from the same location.
Step 3
Specify your fabric precisely
Do not write "heavyweight fleece" — write "380 GSM, 80% combed ring-spun cotton / 20% polyester, loopback fleece, pre-shrunk". Include the Pantone FHI colour reference. Step 4

Mistake 01
Using the wrong Pantone system
Specifying Pantone Coated (C) or Uncoated (U) print references for fabric colours. Print and textile dye systems are completely different — a Pantone 286 C is not achievable in fabric dye and a factory matching it will produce the wrong navy.

Vague fabric description
