Screen printing forces ink through a mesh stencil (the "screen") directly onto the fabric surface. The result is a flat, bold, high-opacity print with excellent colour accuracy for spot colours. Screen print ink sits on top of the fabric, which means it has a slight hand feel — not as pronounced as DTF, but noticeable on lighter fabrics. On heavy cotton (260+ GSM), the ink bites into the fibres more naturally and the feel is minimal. Plastisol ink is the standard for commercial screen printing — flexible, vibrant, and durable. DTF prints your design onto a specialised PET film using digital inkjet printing, then applies a powder adhesive and heat-cures it. The finished transfer is then heat-pressed onto the garment. Unlike DTG, it does not print directly onto the fabric — it creates a transfer layer that bonds to almost any textile surface, regardless of fibre content or colour.
This makes DTF the most versatile decoration method available. It works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and even non-textile materials like leather and canvas. It handles full photographic colour with gradients, fine detail, and unlimited colour complexity at no extra cost. There is no minimum — you can print one piece or a thousand with the same file. There is no setup fee.
The trade-off is durability and feel. DTF transfers sit on top of the fabric as a solid layer, which creates a slight rubbery or plastic texture, most noticeable on fine fabric. At 20–30 wash cycles, the edges of the transfer can begin to lift on cheaper applications. At our quality level, proper curing and quality adhesive powder extends this to 30–40 washes before visible wear. For brands that want maximum durability, screen print or embroidery is a better choice.
DTF has also largely replaced DTG for most commercial applications because it is faster, works on any colour garment without pre-treatment, and is more consistent across different fabric types. Many operations that formerly used DTG have switched entirely to DTF.
